To showcase their pre-AW collection, Kenzo decided to revisit their Japanese roots. The short film, written and directed by Partel Oliva, features an edgy Japanese all-girl biker gang – of course clad in Kenzo. The aim of the short is to pay homage to a demon-fighting Japanese folktale hero, Momotarō, while showcasing the alternative beauty of their latest collection.
The film, entitled Du Soleil Au Soleil (Sun To Sun), features animé inspired animations alongside the raw, dramatic footage taken in a Japanese seaside town by Oliva. In a vivid reimagination of the folktale, Kenzo replaces the protagonist, a demon-fighting boy, with an eerie, mysterious female biker. In Kenzo’s rendition, Momoko, as the protagonist is known, has her own all-girl posse of bikers – clearly not a fixture in the traditional folktale. The film is certainly dark; yet it manages to ooze style through and through, in a way that seems to perhaps steer away from Kenzo’s better-known bright patterns and wild colourways.
